Mt Keira, Wollongong

Today we went rock climbing at Mt Keira at Wollongong. Wollongong is the 10th largest city in Australia, just 40 minutes drive south of Sydney. It has some great beaches, a university and the mountain range which includes Mt Keira to the west.

This is the view of Wollongong and surrounding towns from Mt Keira.

It’s a bit hard to see from this picture, but there are five islands off the coast. The Aboriginal dream time story is about 5 naughty little girls that end up being blown out to sea from the mountain range, starting with the naughtiest one, Mimosa. The sixth one was so lonely without her sisters that she was turned to stone, and she is now Mt Keira.

This picture shows how big termite mounds can get.

Are there local legends about naughty kids near you?
